B-11. First Steps in Music: A Musical Workout for Pre-school and Beyond

All people are born with the potential to become musical. With limited music experience in the early years, children consistently lose their intuitions for thinking tunes, feeling rhythms and responding to the expressiveness in music. Bridge research to practice naturally with a rich repertoire of traditional children’s songs, rhymes, games and dances, and develop your children’s musical aptitude. Participants should be ready to play musically.

John Crever,
Set One, 3hrs. in LEC, Ages:3-8

John Crever is a driven educator with more than 25 years of music instructional, production, management and community organizing experience. His ability to connect with students and teachers of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds has enabled him to successfully teach general music and choir in communities ranging from those ravaged by urban blight, to suburban private settings, to overseas students in the international school system in the Arabian Gulf. Throughout, he has carried his love of Kodaly education from Westminster Choir College (’93, ’96) to these diverse venues. Most recently, he has championed the need for quality vocal general music education in Portland, Oregon.

John Crever is a FAME Endorsed Teacher Trainer for Conversational Solfege Level 1 & 2. He began the transition from a traditional Kodaly to a Feierabend instructor in 2008; a move that brought joy and satisfaction to him and countless students in the inner city and beyond. In addition to his own classroom work, he has led workshops for teachers, bringing the Feierabend curricula to inner city children across the district, and offering instructors quality techniques for imparting their own love of music through active learning in song and movement. John lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife and three girls, where he teaches general vocal music to children 4-14.
