First Steps Monthly Planning Form
Chris Anne Powers
This is what Chris uses when planning for her Kindergarten and First Grade First Steps lessons. They are offered in PDF and Excel form so you can customize them for your classroom. Included is a sample of her August/September K Form so you can see how Chris uses the form. Repertoire and activities can be listed on this form, and then you can create daily lesson plans from it. The four boxes next to repertoire help to plan how many repetitions of a piece the students may need. A “notes” section is also included – where you can jot down if you had a fire drill during a particular class, or perhaps note that your students just didn’t get to a particular activity.
The monthly planning form lists every component from the 8-Part workout. At the bottom there is a section for Tonal and Rhythm patterns that you may want to use during transitions. This is recommended in 1st grade only – once your students are on their way to becoming Tuneful, Beatful and Artful. It is great to use these patterns during transitions – Dr. Feierabend calls them “nickels in the bank” – so when you get to Conversational Solfege, the students are familiar with them (remember, reserve “B” patterns as unfamiliar!)
