GLOBAL SOUNDSCAPES: Opening your classroom to the World’s Musical Cultures Colleen Casey-Nelson Prepare students to be global citizens by experiencing music from around the world, affording the opportunity to understand peoples from near and far. Build upon the concept of “Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors” put forward by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s (1990) with music from across continents. Music can transport us and provide opportunities to engage and make connections with our own experiences. Carefully selected resources come to life, representing diverse repertoire, cultural context considerations, and student-centered voices and perspectives. Quality selections highlight the wonderful musical soundscapes that this planet offers. Innovative and meaningful teaching strategies offer support in sharing musical cultures from across the globe. This course is rooted in experiencing music of the world’s peoples in a respectful, engaging, and meaningful way. Great care is taken in the selection of the music while implementing inspiring and creative strategies for exploring our globe. Create, Perform, Respond, and Connect honoring the integrity of the cultures while supporting the teaching of curricular concepts. Open Ears – Open Minds – Open Hearts – Open Minds
