First Steps in Music Teacher Certification Course Description
The First Steps in Music curriculum is designed to prepare children to become musical in by being Tuneful, Beatful, and Artful. First Steps in Music for Infants and Toddlers provides developmentally appropriate activities that are well suited for children under three years old with their caregivers. First Steps in Music for Preschool and Beyond provides activities for children as young as three, but appropriate for any aged child that needs to further develop their tuneful, beatful, and artful abilities. Folk songs and rhymes as well as classical music are the primary source materials that are used to develop their musical minds and abilities. Created by Dr. John Feierabend, this pedagogical approach contains everything you need to lead a music class for preschool and early elementary students, including: Echo Songs, Call-and-Response Songs, Simple Songs, SongTales, Action Songs, Circle Games, Beat Motion Activities, and more. Ample time will be spent on exploring complete lesson plans for a three-year curriculum. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive an official certificate of completion from the Feierabend Association for Music Education.

** Two college quarter credits or two CEUs will be available for this course through Seattle Pacific University. The cost is $110 for the credits and $20 for the CEUs. The registration link for credits will be made available to enrolled participants when the course begins. Please read a description of what quarter credits mean and how they may be applied as you carry them into your HR office or institution. Why do two credits from Seattle Pacific University not always equal two in the HR office?
Answer
SPU is on the quarter system. Therefore, all credits earned will be quarter credits. Here is a more detailed description from the FAQ section of the SPU website, which explains:
Seattle Pacific University on the Quarter System. SPU has been on the Quarter System since 1938 * One Academic credit has 10 contact hours.
What is the Quarter/Semester Conversion? To get the Semester equivalent, divide the Quarter credits by 1.5: 5 quarter credits are equivalent to 3.33 semester credits.
3 quarter credits are equivalent to 2 semester credits.
1 quarter credit is equivalent to .67 semester credits.
CEU’s: One Continuing Education Unit is equal to 10 clock hours [/learn_more]
**The address is for the “Wilson Community Center” instead of Wilson Primary School. Driving location apps will take you to the front side of the school, and it would not be easy to park and access the music room in the back of the school, close to the community center across the parking lot. Park in the parking lot with the open gate. We will have signs as well as somebody to greet.
