Come sing and dance your way to learning the “ear to eye” fundamentals of Conversational Solfege in this interactive session designed for those new to (or those who want a review of) the Feierabend approach to teaching music literacy. Learn how to enable your students to joyfully assimilate the skills to become musically literate using carefully sequenced activities and a 12 step process. Learn repertoire, techniques/games, and teaching tips that will guarantee an educationally enriching and fun environment for your students to learn and grow.
Andrew M. Himelick has been an elementary music teacher in Carmel, IN and is a Preparatory and First Steps director with the Indianapolis Children’s Choir.
He graduated from Butler University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Music degree in music education and was awarded Outstanding Student Teacher. In 1999, he completed the Kodály Certificate of Music Education from Silver Lake College, Manitowoc, WI. He completed Orff-Schulwerk Levels I and II at the University of St. Thomas St. Paul, MN in 2001 and 2002, and Level III at Anderson University in 2005. He received the Indiana University School of Education Martha Lea and Bill Armstrong Teacher Educator Award for the 2006-2007 academic year.
Craig B. Knapp received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from the Crane School of Music at SUNYPotsdam. He earned a Masters Degree from SUNY Stony Brook and has studied graduate work at the University of Hartford, Ithaca College, SUNY Potsdam, University of Memphis, Long Island University, Hofstra Universityand University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, studying with renown music educators including John Feierabend, JosWuytack, Janet Galván and Will Schmid.
Craig is currently in his 17th year teaching Classroom Music, Music Technology, Recorder/Orff Ensemble and Chorus, grades 3 through 5, at the Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School in the Rocky Point Public School District.
Betsy Greene teaches K-5 general music in Burlington, Vermont. She also started and helps manage a First Steps in Music Program for the community at her school (since 2000). Betsy holds a B.M.Ed. from the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam and a M.M.Ed from the Hartt School, University of Hartford. She is both Orff-Schulwerk and Kodaly certified (all three levels).In addition to teaching children, Betsy is a frequent clinician for general music and music literacy workshops in Vermont School Districts and local music education conferences as well as a teacher of graduate courses for music educators in the summer (Conversational Solfege and First Steps in Music).
