Morning Session:
Music in the Early Years with First Steps in Music
Afternoon:
Teaching Musical Thinking with an Ear-first Approach
Description of the sessions:
The morning Session will focus on Music and Movement in the Early Years.
All children have natural musical potential, and regular exposure to music can help them maintain their innate abilities. Dr. John Feierabend, with over 40 years of research, has developed methods to nurture a child’s musical skills through traditional songs, rhymes, games, and dances. This session explores how to develop tunefulness, beatfulness, and artfulness in young children, laying the groundwork for a rich musical life.
Key areas include fostering tuneful independence through pitch exploration, song fragments, solo singing, and arioso improvisation, as outlined in *First Steps in Music*. The session also covers movement and beat development strategies to enhance beatfulness and musical expressivity through pitch exploration, beat-keeping activities, and expressive movement. Designed for educators teaching children aged three to nine, this hands-on session provides practical insights into the Feierabend approach, empowering you to be an effective music educator.
The afternoon Session will focus on Feierabend’s Ear-First Approach to Musical Thinking.
Inspired by Kodaly’s method, John Feierabend’s “Conversational Solfege™” builds on this with research to create a comprehensive, ear-first approach to musical thinking. This session explores the 12-step method to develop musical literacy in learners ages eight and beyond by prioritizing listening, responding, and improvising before reading, dictation, and composition.
Learn how to teach rhythm and tonal elements using traditional repertoire. The session unpacks modeling conversational language acquisition, enabling students to internalize rhythmic and tonal elements naturally before encountering them in written form. Through solfege, call-and-response, and guided improvisation, students will develop rhythmic and tonal fluency, leading to confident music reading, dictation, and composition.
John Crever’s vision for this session is a blending of research-informed pedagogy with practical strategies, empowering educators to foster musical literacy naturally.
